![]() Ĭhristianity, Islam, and Judaism are the Abrahamic religions with the greatest numbers of adherents. ![]() Today the Abrahamic religions are one of the major divisions in comparative religion (along with Indian, Iranian, and East Asian religions). Islam split from Judaism in the 7th century CE, reinterpreting Abraham, Jesus, and other Judeo-Christian figures as human prophets of Islam, and was soon spread by the Umayyad Empire. Another 1st century offshoot, Jewish Christianity, is extinct. Christianity split from Judaism in the 1st century CE, and spread widely after being adopted as the state religion by the Roman Empire in the 4th century. It survives in two modern forms: Judaism and Samaritanism. Israelite religion derives from the Ancient Canaanite religion of the Bronze Age, and became monotheistic in the Iron Age, around 6th century BCE. Most scholars believe the story of Abraham originated in the 6th century BCE, and that the Book of Genesis does not represent historical events. After a century of exhaustive archaeological investigation, no evidence has been found for these historical patriarchs. Jewish tradition claims Twelve Tribes of Israel descend from Abraham's son Isaac and grandson Jacob Islamic tradition claims that twelve Arab tribes descend from Abraham's son Ishmael.
